High transparency and reduced shrinkage

The nanoparticles described in Section Modifying heat and room temperature curing adhesives with nanoparticles can also be used in UV-curing systems. Nanoparticle modified acrylate monomers (Nanocryl® A) or cycloaliphatic epoxy resins (Nanopox® A 610) enable a whole range of material properties to be significantly improved.

Improvements to properties [back]

The products are highly transparent, low viscous and do not show any sedimentation, i.e. the processability remains essentially unchanged compared to the respective base resin. This way, the respective advantages of organic and inorganic materials can be combined almost perfectly.

Important material properties which can be improved by the use of Nanocryl® A are:

  • no reduction in transparency despite high filler content
  • reduced cure shrinkage and heat of reaction
  • reduced thermal expansion and internal stresses
  • barrier effect against gases, water vapour and solvents
  • increased weathering resistance and inhibited thermal aging
  • greatly improved scratch and abrasion resistance
  • increase in tear resistance, fracture toughness and modulus
  • improved adhesion on numerous inorganic substrates (e.g. glass, aluminium)
  • improvement in numerous other desired properties, such as: thermal stability, stain resistance, heat conductivity, dielectric properties

Nanocryl® A products are not only used in UV adhesives, but also in stereolithography, which is increasingly used as a rapid prototyping process. The transparency, combined with the increase in the strength and modulus, is important here.
